HONORING ASIA’S FASTEST WOMAN: Sen. Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada pays tribute to sports legend Lydia De Vega during Monday’s plenary session, August 15, 2022. Co-sponsoring a resolution expressing the Upper Chamber’s sympathies and condolences on De Vega’s passing, Estrada cited the athlete’s record-breaking achievements that “put the Philippines in the world map.” “In a world traditionally dominated by men, Lydia served as an inspiration to Filipina athletes and raised the profile of women in Philippine sports,” the senator said in Filipino. “Maybe in another lifetime, we will come across another female giant of Philippine sports and topple her victories in 53 international competitions,” Estrada added, further describing De Vega as “one of the greatest athletes the country has ever produced” and a “national treasure.” De Vega, hailed as Asia’s Sprint Queen, succumbed to breast cancer last August 10. She was 57. (Bibo Nueva España/Senate PRIB)
