Senator Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada has filed a resolution commending Filipina tennis sensation Alexandra “Alex” Eala for her continuing meteoric rise following her championship victory at the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) 125 Lexus Birmingham Open 2026, another historic feat that further solidifies her place among the country’s greatest athletes.
“Alex Eala is a national pride who brings immense honor and glory to the country as she continues to conquer the international stage and climb the world rankings. She has single-handedly reignited the nation’s passion for tennis, which is now enjoying a renewed following and growing interest among Filipinos, especially the younger generation,” Estrada said in his Senate Resolution No. 444.
The senator added that Eala’s latest accomplishment is another milestone for Philippine sports that merits the Senate’s highest commendation and praise.
This is not the first time the veteran lawmaker has recognized Eala’s achievements. In fact, he has filed at least three Senate resolutions since the 19th Congress honoring her historic accomplishments in international tennis competitions.
These initiatives reflect Estrada’s recognition of Eala’s invaluable contributions to Philippine sports and her role in inspiring a new generation of Filipino athletes.
The 21-year-old tennis star entered the Birmingham tournament as the top seed and battled her way through a competitive field of 32 singles players. She capped her impressive campaign with a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Nikola Bartunkova of the Czech Republic in the finals, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, to capture the championship crown.
Her dominant run included straight-set victories over Priscilla Hon of Australia and Alina Charaeva of Russia, followed by convincing wins against Mananchaya Sawangkaew of Thailand and Rebeka Masarova of Switzerland in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively.
With the victory, Eala secured her second WTA 125 title following her breakthrough triumph at the Guadalajara Open in Zapopan, Mexico, in September 2025. She also earned $33,650 in prize money and valuable ranking points, boosting her world ranking to No. 33.
The Birmingham Open title places Eala in distinguished company, joining former Grand Slam champions and world No. 1 players such as Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, Maria Sharapova, Angelique Kerber, and Ashleigh Barty, all of whom won the prestigious tournament at some point in their illustrious careers.
“Alex is not only winning championships; she is creating a legacy. Her latest victory in Birmingham is another proud chapter in an extraordinary journey that Filipinos will continue to follow and celebrate. She has shown us that no dream is too big when matched with dedication, perseverance, and courage,” Estrada said.
