Jinggoy hails historic feat of PH Men’s Volleyball Team in FIVB World Championships

Senator Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada joined colleagues in celebrating the historic achievement and gallant stand of the Philippine Men’s National Volleyball Team, Alas Pilipinas, for bringing pride and honor to the country after ranking 19th out of 32 teams in the recently concluded Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) Men’s World Championships 2025.

“Sa unang pagkakataon na Pilipinas ang nag-host ng FIVB World Championships, ipinakita ng ating mga atleta sa buong mundo ang puso at dedikasyon nating mga Pilipino. While the other teams may have the height and power advantage, the Filipino players matched them with speed, resilience, and heart,” Estrada said, noting the overwhelming support of the Filipino crowd that boosted the players’ morale and confidence.

The men’s national volleyball team marked a milestone for the country with their first-ever victory in the world championships, stunning world no. 21 Egypt. The win, Estrada said in his co-sponsorship speech, demonstrated the world-class caliber of Filipino athletes who stood toe-to-toe against taller and more seasoned opponents.

Entering the tournament ranked 88th—the lowest among all 32 competing teams—Alas Pilipinas showcased grit, teamwork, and exceptional talent in their matches against Tunisia, an 11-time African champion; Egypt; and Iran, a three-time Asian Games titleholder. The Philippines narrowly missed advancing to the Round of 16 after a heartbreaking loss to Iran.

Despite this, Estrada underscored that the nation remains proud of the team’s historic run. By the end of the tournament, the Philippines finished 19th overall, alongside powerhouse and Olympic medalist teams from Brazil, France, Cuba, Germany, and Japan.

He also commended Filipino standouts Bryan Bagunas, Marck Espejo, Josh Ybanez, and Joshua Retamar, who were recognized as among the top performers in the preliminary round in their respective categories—Best Attacker, Best Receiver, Best Setter, and Best Digger.

Estrada likewise congratulated coach Angiolino Frigoni, the coaching staff, and the tournament organizers for their role in the team’s success, as well as for setting another milestone with the final match between Italy and Bulgaria becoming the highest-attended World Championship game, drawing an astounding 16,429 spectators.

“Mabuhay ang atletang Pilipino!” Estrada declared, reaffirming his support for initiatives that will continue to uplift Philippine sports and athletes on the global stage.
