3 March 2026

Mr. President, distinguished colleagues,

Kindly allow this representation to co-sponsor Proposed Senate Resolution No. 327, taking into consideration Proposed Senate Resolution No. 328, honoring His Excellency, President Lee Jae Myung of the Republic of Korea, on the occasion of his first State Visit to the Philippines, aimed at further expanding cooperation between our two nations.

Philippines–Republic of Korea bilateral relations date back to 1949, marking the formal establishment of diplomatic ties between our countries. This year’s State Visit is especially significant as it coincides with the 77th anniversary of our enduring diplomatic relationship.

South Korea has long been one of the Philippines’ most reliable defense partners.

Following the acquisition of FA-50 light combat aircraft in 2014, and the additional units delivered in 2025, South Korea has continued to provide logistical and sustainment support to our Armed Forces. These assets have strengthened our air defense capabilities and supported our transition toward more advanced fighter systems.

In the naval domain, the delivery of frigates, corvettes, and offshore patrol vessels — including the recently commissioned BRP Rajah Sulayman — has significantly enhanced our ability to patrol and protect our maritime territory.

These are not merely equipment acquisitions. They represent trust, long-term cooperation, and a shared commitment to regional peace and stability.

Beyond defense, South Korea has become one of the Philippines’ major partners in trade, tourism, and economic development. Cooperation in infrastructure, modernization, digital transformation, and sustainable growth continues to deepen as both nations strive to further strengthen bilateral ties.

Several key infrastructure and development projects in the country have been supported through Korean assistance and financing, underscoring the depth of South Korea’s engagement in our national development.

And beyond economics and security, the cultural connection between our peoples continues to flourish. From K-pop and Korean cuisine to fashion, film, and streaming series, South Korea’s cultural influence has become a vibrant and enduring presence in Filipino society.

Indeed, our partnership has grown beyond diplomacy—it has become a genuine friendship between our peoples.

Thank you, Mr. President.
