Jinggoy Estrada files resolution honoring ‘Asia’s Queen of Songs’ Pilita Corrales

(POLITIKO) Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada has filed a resolution seeking to honor the late Pilita Corrales, “Asia’s Queen of Songs” who died on April 12 at the age of 87.

Estrada filed Senate Resolution No. 1336, expressing the upper chamber’s condolences to her family and celebrating Corrales’ remarkable life as a singer, songwriter, and actress.

Estrada, in his resolution, lauded Corrales impact on the Philippine entertainment industry.

“Her immense talent has inspired generations of Filipino artists and her departure has left a void in the hearts of those who admire and look up to her not just as an artist but also as an empowered woman,” Estrada said.

Born Pilar Garrido Corrales in Cebu City on August 22, 1937, Pilita Corrales carved a legendary career spanning over six decades.

Estrada highlighted her status as one of the country’s finest vocalists, noting her extensive discography of over 135 albums recorded in Filipino, English, Spanish, and Cebuano.

The resolution also acknowledged Corrales’ international success.

Estrada recalled her triumph at the 1972 Tokyo Music Festival, where she won the Best Performer Award, surpassing renowned artists like Paul Williams and Olivia Newton-John.

He also noted her groundbreaking achievement as the first Filipino singer and one of the first women to top the Australian pop charts.

Estrada emphasized that Corrales’ talent took her to prestigious international stages such as Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Carnegie Hall in New York, and the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.

Beyond her vocal prowess, Corrales was celebrated for her signature backbending pose while hitting high notes, a unique trademark that endeared her to millions.

Corrales also showcased her versatility in television and film, leaving an indelible mark beyond the music industry.

Her timeless hits, including “A Million Thanks to You” and “Kapantay ay Langit,” continue to resonate with her admirers, Estrada said.

Throughout her distinguished career, Corrales received numerous accolades, including awards from Cecil, Aliw, Tinig, Awit, and FAMAS.

The Philippine Association of the Record Industry also bestowed upon her a Lifetime Achievement Award for her significant role in elevating Filipino musical artistry on the global stage.

Estrada said his resolution seeks to recognize Corrales as a trailblazer who inspired Filipino artists with her talent and empowered many through her artistry.
