Estrada cites need for AI training for gov’t workers

(PNA) MANILA – Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada on Wednesday underscored the need to equip government employees with artificial intelligence (AI) knowledge and skills, citing the growing role of AI in public service and global workforce trends.

“AI is transforming industries, and the government must ensure its workforce is prepared to adapt. Training civil servants in AI will enhance their capabilities and improve service delivery,” he said in a news release.

The senator said private companies and government agencies worldwide are already integrating AI into their operations, pointing out that discussions on AI’s impact – whether as a tool for efficiency or a threat to jobs – highlight the urgency of workforce preparation.

“AI has immense potential, from automating tasks to providing complex solutions in seconds. While we must harness its benefits, we also need to manage its risks, including concerns over discrimination, privacy and national security,” he said.

To address these challenges, Estrada filed Senate Bill No. 2930 proposing a training program under the Department of Information and Communications Technology, which would develop courses on AI fundamentals, its applications in governance, potential risks and strategies for safe and ethical AI use.

The program would be conducted at least every two years and cover government employees involved in program management, planning, research, development, engineering, testing, procurement and other designated roles.

Estrada said investing in AI training will not only strengthen the government workforce but also ensure the responsible use of technology in public service. (PNA)
