Senate reso honors Samboy Lim’s major feats in PH basketball

(MANILA BULLETIN) A measure seeking to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of the late Avelino “Samboy” Lim has been filed at the Senate.

Senator Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada, in filing Senate Resolution No. 911, said Lim merits the recognition of the Senate for showing his boundless passion for the sport and exhibiting the ideals of sportsmanship on the court.

The resolution also expressing the Senate’s sympathy and condolences to the family of the Philippine basketball’s “The Skywalker,” considered one of the 25 greatest players in Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) history, who passed away last December 23 at the age of 61.

“His love and dedication to the sport as demonstrated by his outstanding performances exhilarated fans, inspired generations of athletes, and contributed immensely to the growth of Philippine basketball,” the senator said.

Estrada noted how Lim earned the nickname “The Skywalker” due to his gravity-defying moves and high-flying plays on the court during the 1980s and 1990s.

Lim was also the first recipient of the PBA Sportsmanship Award in 1993 for embodying the ideals of sportsmanship– ethical behavior, fair play and integrity.

“Lim is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished basketball players who brought joy, pride and honor to the country, and merits the recognition of the Philippine Senate,” Estrada said in his resolution.

“His passing is an immense loss not only to his family, but to the entire nation as well,” he added.
