Estrada on subjecting justices and judges to CA confirmation

ESTRADA ON SUBJECTING JUSTICES AND JUDGES TO CA CONFIRMATION: Sen. Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada says that subjecting judges and justices to the Commission on Appointments’ (CA) confirmation would not help depoliticize the selection process. Estrada expressed this position in reaction to a proposal to have members of the judiciary undergo CA confirmation following their presidential appointment during Monday’s hybrid hearing September 19, 2022 on the proposed P52.72-billion budget of the judiciary for 2023. Subjecting members of the judiciary to the CA may not help improve the notion because the commission is composed of politicians, particularly senators and congressmen, Estrada pointed out. Under the current process, justices and judges are appointed by the president based on the list submitted by the Judicial and Bar Council. (Bibo Nueva España/Senate PRIB)
