4 senators seek PH Senate Medal of Excellence for Carlos Yulo

(ABS-CBN) Tolentino filed Senate Resolution 1106 seeking the accolade for Yulo for “exceptional achievement” for winning his 2 Olympic Golds in the Men’s Floor Exercise and Vault Competition in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“Mr. Yulo made history for Philippine Gymnastics by becoming the country’s first double Olympic gold medalist, showcasing his grit and talent as he reigned supreme in the floor exercises and men’s vault final at the 2024 Paris Olympics,” Tolentino said in his resolution.

The resolution also cites Yulo’s prior victories as the first Filipino and male southeast Asian gymnast to get a medal at the World Artistic Gymnastic Championships by winning the bronze medal in the floor exercise in 2018. It also cites him as the first Filipino and Southeast Asian to win a gold medal in the same criteria in 2019 also at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.

“Despite a left elbow injury, Mr. Yulo won a gold medal on vault and a silver on parallel bars at the 2021 World Championships in Kitakyushu, Japan.” Tolentino also cited.

The Philippine Senate Medal of Excellence is awarded to outstanding Filipinos for exemplary service, exceptional achievements and invaluable contributions to nation building.

Senator Joel Villanueva filed a separate resolution seeking the same honor.

“Mr. Yulo has made the country proud for his record-breaking achievements at the 2024 Summer Olympics. His world-class talent, unwavering determination and commitment to excellence, and masterful performance merit the highest recognition from this august chamber,” Villanueva said.

Estrada also filed his own resolution seeking the highest expression of national appreciation for Yulo.

“Yulo’s outstanding achievement at the world’s biggest sporting event should be celebrated by the entire nation as it is a testament to the excellent skill and unyielding spirit of the Filipinos. His glorious success is a shining example of what hard work, discipline, perseverance, and commitment to excellence can accomplish,” Estrada said in his Senate Resolution No. 1103.

Zubiri said as he filed his own Resolution 1108.

“With the Senate Medal of Excellence, we are recognizing Caloy not just for his extraordinary skill and talent, but also for his patriotism. This is our way of thanking him for proudly carrying our flag and showing the world the heart and spirit of the Filipino people,” he said.

Tolentino separately filed Senate Resolution 1102 for the Senate to honor and congratulate Yulo.

Villanueva also filed his own Senate Resolution 1104 commending Yulo.

“His monumental achievements at the 2024 Summer Olympics have earned Yulo a place in history books. He has brought immense pride, glory, and honor to the country with his exceptional performances and thus deserves the highest praise, recognition and commendation.” Villanueva said.

Senator Grace Poe paid tribute to Yulo separately.

“Hats off to Carlos Yulo for making history with his double gold win in gymnastics. His victory  lifted our spirits and made us hopeful as a nation. We similarly congratulate our athletes who braved the hurdles in their respective sports, and we will continue to cheer those who are still in the games.” Poe said.

Senator Raffy Tulfo offered a thanksgiving prayer for Yulo in his opening prayer for today’s session.

“Almighty father with grateful hearts  we rejoice in the victory of our athletes in the Paris Olympics, especially the gold medals won by Carlos Yulo. May we take these wins not just a reason to celebrate but as an inspiration to represent our nation in the best way we can,” Tulfo said.
