Jinggoy honors JPE: “Irrespresible, irreplaceable, incomparable – a true statesman and a loyal friend

Senator Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada paid an emotional and deeply personal tribute to former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile during the necrological service held at the Senate, calling him “a towering political figure, a loyal friend, and family in every sense of the word.”

Recalling Enrile’s own words—“That’s longevity, not immortality”—Estrada reflected on the former Senate leader’s remarkable journey through eight presidencies and more than six decades of public service.

“Beyond the memes that attempted to parody the long, storied life of one of the most consequential political figures in recent history is a man who was, in truth, larger than life. And I am fortunate not only to have worked alongside him in the halls of this august chamber, but to have been mentored by him and given the rare chance to know him up close,” Estrada said in his eulogy.

Estrada recounted Enrile’s unwavering support for his father, former President Joseph Ejercito Estrada, especially during moments of political turmoil. From accompanying Enrile during his 1990 arrest to offering crucial advice during the final hours of President Estrada’s departure from Malacañang, Enrile’s loyalty never wavered.

“He repaid my father’s kindness many times over,” Estrada shared. “And when it was our turn to face arrest and detention, he stood by us. Walang iwanan.”

The senator also remembered Enrile’s personal warmth and humility—his fondness for simple meals, his love for reading and for playing “Bejeweled” on his tablet, and his quiet acts of kindness toward Senate staff.

Estrada highlighted Enrile’s wisdom and generosity in mentoring younger senators, including himself. He quoted Enrile’s belief that the Senate is not a classroom but a constitutional body where every member must come prepared.

“Whenever I had doubts, I sought his counsel. He was always willing to share his thoughts,” Estrada said.

“Many will remember him as a central political figure who served under eight presidents across more than six decades,” he added. “But to me, he is—and will always be—family.”

In closing, Estrada addressed Enrile’s family—Ma’am Cristina, Jack, Katrina, and his grandchildren—with gratitude for their sacrifices and support throughout Enrile’s storied career.

“Gone from our sight, but never from our hearts,” Estrada said. “Salamat, Manong Johnny. Hinding-hindi ka namin makakalimutan.”
