Jinggoy hails Alex Eala’s historic WTA 125 title win

THROUGH a resolution, Senator Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada is seeking a Senate commendation for tennis sensation Alexandra “Alex” Maniego Eala for making history as the first Filipino to capture a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) championship title.

“Eala’s breakthrough accomplishments and milestone successes at such a young age propel Philippine tennis to greater heights and immense honor, joy and pride to the country, hence deserving of the highest commendation from the Philippine Senate as representatives of the people,” Estrada said in filing Senate Resolution No. 112.

The 20-year-old Eala clinched the victory at the Pan American Tennis Center in Zapopan, Mexico, defeating Hungary’s Panna Udvardy in a thrilling comeback match, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, marking another milestone in her trailblazing career.

Eala, seeded second in the tournament, displayed grit and determination throughout the competition. She swept five matches en route to the title, dropping only two sets along the way. Her performance included back-to-back victories in the Round of 16 and quarterfinals on the same day, as well as a commanding semifinal win against American Kayla Day.

With the win, Eala etched her name in the record books as the first Filipina to secure a WTA singles crown.

Estrada said Eala’s feat is “a historic triumph that brings immense honor and pride to the country.”

“The Philippine Senate has always recognized the extraordinary achievements of Filipino athletes who bring pride and honor to our country. Alex Eala’s victory in Guadalajara is not only a personal milestone but also a historic triumph for Philippine tennis,” the veteran lawmaker also said.

Estrada said Eala has been setting milestones all year, noting that in March, she had a dream run in the Miami Open, reaching the semifinals against world champions and former titleholders.

She also made her main draw debuts in the French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open. Just last month, she became the first Filipino player to win a main draw Grand Slam singles match after beating world No. 14 Clara Tauson of Denmark at the US Open.

Earlier in June, Eala was also the first Filipina to reach a WTA final at the Eastbourne Open, finishing runner-up against Australia’s Maya Joint.

Currently ranked world No. 75, with a career-high of 56th, she continues to inspire young Filipinos with her trailblazing journey.

“Alex is a shining example of perseverance, discipline, and excellence. Her achievements bring immense pride to our nation and inspire the youth to pursue sports and strive for greatness,” Estrada said.
